Christmas Comes Early!

My grandma had been watching an old 25" television for the longest time with just an antenna on her roof. She put up with a handful of channels long enough so the family bought her an early Christmas present and set up a new 32" television with a new stand and DIRECTV. Now she has over 150 channels!

Here's a picture of her old setup...

And here's the new TV and stand...

Adopt-a-family 2006

Each year our company participates in an adopt-a-family program. Each department has the opportunity to "adopt" one family and provide gifts and food for the holidays. Here's a photo of the gifts we all bought and wrapped...

Some people chose to donate food and/or contribute cash towards a food store gift card. Thanks to the economy sized items from Costco, this family is getting a lot of food!

Canon ZR-700 MiniDV Camcorder

Looked into upgrade my old Sony Hi-8 camcorder to a hard drive camcorder but found that the technology still needs a year or more to fully mature. Right now, the compression needed to record to a hard drive or mini DVD results in video quality that is the same or inferior to the current technology, MiniDV. So, for a fraction of the cost, I went with a more basic MiniDV Canon camcorder. I've included some pictures below. Isn't the size difference amazing!

One nice feature about this Canon is that it records in a widescreen format (as you can see in the LCD screen comparison below).

Looks like the Sony is going to eat the Canon!

Luke, I am your father!

Darth Vader and Coke Man?!? Emily and Ryan are always ready to have a little fun!

Jay's Birthday

Jay's birthday was on October 15th so Heidi and I chose to remember him by having one of his favorite treats, a cookie! We had it personalized for him...

I was never a big fan of the pug until I met my friend Robin's pug, Kami. Now I'm a fan of the pug! I found this picture on www.flickr.com.

Undefeated...WOW! It's been a while!

Last night we won our hockey game with a score of 9-4 and now our record is 3-0. I can't remember the last time we had such a good start to a season. I'm definitely not complaining, but it kind of feels weird. This last game this one "kid" showed up and racked up 4 goals for us. It's also been a while since we've had a ringer on our bench. We've certainly played against our share in the past. Jeff and I are having fun on this new team.

Our San Jose Sharks start another season this Thursday against the St. Louis Blues. Can you smell the ice? GO SHARKS !!

Heidi's Birthday Dinner

We celebrated Heidi's birthday this year at CreAsian in Morgan Hill. The food was good and my Mom was nice enough to find the perfect bakery to create a chocolate cake with fresh raspberries and whipped cream. It was nice having everyone get together to wish Heidi a happy birthday.

Steve Turned 39 Years Old

We celebrated Steve's birthday on Saturday night at Elephant Bar & Restaurant in Cupertino. There was a good a good turnout of nine family members and the food was great. I know Steve LOVES to have his picture taken, but I was lucky enough to get a decent smile out of him.

CreAsian Restaurant

Tried a new restaurant in Morgan Hill today with Robin. It's called CreAsian and it's selling itself as "Creative Asian Cuisine". Fairly large menu that seemed to mainly be Japanese dishes. I had the bento box that included chicken teriyaki and gyoza. It wasn't bad. I'll be back to try the thai chicken dish that Robin ordered.

Henry Coe State Park

This weekend we went for a little hike with our niece and nephew (Emily & Ryan) at Henry Coe. Emily wanted to go for a much longer hike, but we didn't go too far since we weren't sure how far Ryan could go. But Ryan kept up the whole way and was the first one to make it back to the parking lot!

Mom Gets an iPod

My Mom has been wanting an iPod for quite some time and she got one over the weekend! She decided on a 5G 30GB model since it has a big screen. She liked the weight and size of the Nano, but the screen is just too small.

iTunes 7.0 has some nice improvements and I think she's going to have fun with the iPod and iTunes. We also had to pick up a couple of speakers and subwoofer for their PC so they can enjoy their music in their home office.

It just worked out that Apple just lowered their pricing of the 30GB model by $50...

Back on the Ice

Jeff & I had our first preseason game with our new team last night and dropping down a few divisions made a huge difference in our game. We both played well last night and we ended up winning 5-2 with our team pretty much dominating most of the game.

Logitech Ice & USA Hockey followed suit with the NHL and created new tougher rules on obstruction. There were a ton of penalties to start out the season. Basically, if you put your stick on another player, you're going to the box! Jeff, pictured below, was beating the opposing team's forwards to the puck all night long.

Dew Action Sports Tour

Heidi and I will be going on Saturday to the Dew Action Sports Tour at HP Pavilion. Hopefully we'll get to see some great Freestyle Motocross action and witness Travis Pastrana's amazing skills (although I doubt he'll be doing a double backflip outdoors).

After the FMX, maybe we'll have some time to check out the BMX and/or skateboarders do their thing inside the HP Pavilion...

This picture is from the Denver stop of the tour. It should be fun!

Honda Element

Every vehicle has it's pros and cons and with my Element there are certainly some negatives (suicide doors & underpowered engine). But it also has some nice positives (clamshell rear gate & cargo height capacity). It's definitely nice being able to put our bikes in the back of the Element (without taking the front wheels off) and being able to run some errands or go out to lunch after the ride without worrying about people stealing or vandalizing your bike. Would I buy an Element again? Probably not, but it's still been a fun and unique vehicle.

Heidi's Art

Heidi painted two pieces with cycling themes for our upstairs TV room. They should go great in the room! We're also thinking about buying a complete vintage bike and mounting it on the adjacent wall for some added depth. If you have any ideas on the best way to mount a complete bike (with the least amount of hardware showing) please let us know.

Kauai Album Finally Complete

Heidi and I finally finished our first scrap book album of our family trip to Kauai. It only took THREE months to complete! It's been fun sharing the album with family and friends.

Let us know if you'd like to see it and we'll bring it the next time we see you.

Donald to Carolyn: You're Fired!

Donald Trump has turned on one of his own, giving the axe to his longtime boardroom sidekick and Apprentice costar amid a newspaper report that TV fame had gone to her head.

Kepcher had run two of Trump's golf courses and was a longtime fixture at the Trump Organization; more prominently, she had served as Trump's right-hand woman since NBC launched The Apprentice in 2004.

According to the New York Post, Kepcher was given the boot after Trump became frustrated by her outside projects.

"She became a prima donna," a presumably close, unnamed "insider" told the newspaper. "She was giving speeches for $25,000 and doing endorsements."

Kepcher's termination will have no affect on production of The Apprentice. She was not involved in the upcoming sixth season, which was set in Los Angeles and has finished shooting.

Proving nepotism is alive and kicking, Trump earlier tapped daughter Ivanka to take over as the reality show's requisite female sidekick, with Donald Trump Jr. chosen to fill-in for the other longtime Apprentice lackey, George Ross.

The 78-year-old Ross, a corporate counsel for the Trump Organization, will sit out for several episodes this season to make way for the younger Donald. Unlike Kepcher, however, a Trump Organization executive told CNN that Ross is "very much a part of the company" and is not being pushed out.

Flat Tire

Was leaving work for an appointment today and found my right front wheel down on it's rim. I immediately saw a large screw sticking out of my tire. Just my luck! Postponed my appointment, got the kiddie jack out of the car and spent the next 12 minutes getting fithly. I should have gotten a Nissan Frontier like I initially wanted, then I wouldn't have had to drive around with the mini spare shown above. Spent a couple of hours at home plugging the tire. Geesh, what an evening...

You never realize how dirty a tire is until you have to hoist it into the back of your vehicle! :)

New 'Survivor' divides groups by race

Get ready for a segregated "Survivor." Race will matter on the upcoming season of the CBS show as contestants will be divided into four tribes by ethnicity. That means blacks, whites, Latinos and Asians in separate groups.

The announcement was made on CBS' Early Show. Host Jeff Probst says the idea "actually came from the criticism that 'Survivor' was not ethnically diverse enough." He says the twist fits in perfectly with what "Survivor" does, saying the show is "a social experiment. And this is adding another layer to that experiment." Probst says contestants had mixed reactions to the racial divisions.

This time the new Survivors are stranded on the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. The castaways include a police officer, a heavy metal guitarist, an attorney and a nail salon manager. The new season of Survivor debuts September 14th

iPod Nano Killer? Probably Not.

SanDisk is going after the Apple Nano with it's new Sansa. This has 8GB of memory with an expandable microSD slot to boost the total memory to 10GB (for a total capacity of 2,500 songs.

So, this unit will store twice as many songs at the Nano for almost the same price.

Sounds good, but I still like the Apple iTunes software the best. It just works as promised, unlike other MP3 software packages I've used in the past (mainly Creative products). What's the point of saving money on the hardware just to be frustrated by the limitations of the software... Just my $0.02.

Ricky Carmichael Laps the Field in 30 Minutes!

Once again, Ricky Carmichael is making history in the AMA Motocross Championship as the Team Makita Suzuki rider has become the first rider in America to lap an entire motocross field on his way to a double victory at Sunday´s AMA Motocross Championship ninth round at Spring Creek, Millville in Minnesota. The reigning Champion came from behind on his Suzuki RM-Z450 in the opening race to beat Kawasaki’s Bubba Stewart and in the second – run under extremely muddy conditions – the Florida rider lapped everyone to take his seventh straight victory of the season, his seventh at the Millville track and his 142nd combined AMA motocross/ Supercross win.

Ping's Mongolian BBQ

A couple of weekends ago some family members met at Ping's Mongolian BBQ here in Morgan Hill for dinner. It's an all-you-can-eat buffet where you add vegetables, noodles, meats and sauces into a bowl and they stir fry everything on a large round grill. The food was good and reasonably priced. I'm sure we'll be back for more...

Please Share The Road!

I know I'm a little biased since I am a cyclist but I wanted to share a story of a rider from my bike club...

"I will not riding my bicycle for the next 6 weeks. I was involved in an accident with a car while on vacation in Boston. A car went through a red light and hit the back of my Bike Friday. I was in the middle of the T-intersection and saw the car coming. I tried to get out of the way, but had no luck. I did not hit my head. The bike took the brunt of the force. My initial injury was a deep laceration just above my ankle on the right leg that required stitches. Luckily, the cut did not damage muscle or the Achilles tendon. However, I also had fractured the top part of my tibia. I did not realize this until after I had completed Boston-Montreal-Boston and came home. Yesterday, after much pain trying to go up and down stairs, I went in for x-rays. I will be in a cast or some kind of splint for the next 6 weeks."

I always ask people that don't cycle to try and imagine themselves being the cyclist and having someone come dangerously close to them with their car. I guarantee they would not be happy about it. Or, like what happened to Paul above, being struck by a reckless driver.

Jeff tried mountain biking with me over the weekend at Anderson Reservoir here in Morgan Hill. He's shown here acting like he's getting sick. What a sense of humor!

Next we're going to try Santa Teresa County Park off of Bernal...

Palm to unveil new Treo model next month

Handheld computer and phone maker Palm Inc. is to unveil the latest version of its Treo smart phone next month as it attempts to revive sales hit by tough competition and problems with previous models.

Palm is to launch the new handset to Vodafone customers in a number of European countries including the U.K., Germany, Spain, Italy and Netherlands as it attempts to win back the confidence of a market it once dominated with its Palm Pilot device.

The company is hoping the move to the Windows Mobile will help alleviate the concerns of Treo users who have long complained of Palm's own operating system crashing the handsets on a regular basis.

Order to shut down DISH DVRs blocked

EchoStar Communications Corp., parent of the DISH Network satellite TV service, on Friday said a federal appeals court temporarily blocked a lower-court order that would have forced EchoStar to turn off about 4 million of its digital video recorders within 30 days.

Earlier Friday, a U.S. District Court judge in Texas granted a motion by TiVo Inc. for the DVR shutdown and ordered EchoStar to pay $89.6 million in damages.

The decision comes after a federal jury in April determined that EchoStar willfully infringed on TiVo's "time-warp" patent, which applies to the way a DVR simultaneously records one program while playing back another.

EchoStar is the country's second-largest satellite TV provider with about 12.5 million subscribers.

Owen Nolan Signs with Coyotes

Owen Nolan finally made it back to the NHL after his most recent injury kept him on the shelf the entire season last year. Wayne Gretzy is taking a chance with him and thinks he'll be one of the best power forwards on the Phoenix roster.

Jeff Catching Some Air

Oh yea, I almost forgot to share this photo of Jeff doing a little trick at Hollister Hills. Kind of a beginner move, but he looks pretty good, eh? Actually, this is Adam Jones at the Moto X Freestyle event. I don't know if you've watched much of the X Games before, but those athletes are CRAZY.

Hollister Hills - Hill Climbs

On Saturday Jeff and I went to Hollister Hills to go dirt bike riding. This photo of a "bowl" shaped area is one of our favorite spots to ride. You can see all the different routes you can take to descend and climb each side. If you enlarge the photo (by clicking on it) you will see Jeff on the other side. This kind of puts the size of these hills into perspective!

2006 Coyote Creek Cycling Classic

Just signed up for the 2006 Coyote Creek Cycling Classic. This is a fun ride put on by the Boy Scouts of America and it starts and ends at the Model Aircraft Skypark on Coyote Creek Trail. There are 12, 25 and 50 mile routes. I plan on riding the 50 mile route that passes by all three local reservoirs (Calero, Chesbro and Uvas). This is a ride I wanted to participate in last year, but it was too close to the Waves to Wine MS Society ride. If you'd like to learn more about this ride, below is the link to the main page:

Kauai Vacation

I like this photo because everyone looks so relaxed and happy. This was taken by a nice person passing by who offered to take our picture. Supposedly, parts of the first Jurassic Park movie were shot in the background of this photo near the jagged breakwater.

Life is Good!

Back in 2002 our hockey team had the opportunity to play an exhibition game on the same ice that the San Jose Sharks play on. Yea, we didn't get the fancy locker room, but it was still great playing on the same ice as the pros. Not to brag, but we won by a score of 7-0 or something like that.

Pictured is my Dad, Scott Kendall and Mike Griffith.

Hockey Update

Well, looks like Jeff and I will not be moving to the Over 35 hockey league after all. We were invited by a current teammate to transition to his other team. It's three divisions down from our current division so hopefully we'll be a little more competitive. Looks like the Over 35 level will have to wait for us...

The Kendall Family

This is the only picture I have of Robin, Scott & little Kami. I'm still working with Robin and Scott has moved to Southern California and is doing well working at Expo Design Center selling their products & services. Kami is a diabetic and needs two insulin shots each day (but that doesn't stop her from enjoying life).

Indoor Rock Climbing

Here's our neice Emily at City Beach in Fremont. Amazingly she wasn't scared at all and just climbed straight to the top on the first try. Needless to say, it was a proud moment. We'll have to make some time and go again.

If anyone wants to go, just let us know. Maybe it'll motivate us to go on a regular basis...

Japanese Pen Pal

A co-worker had asked me to be a pen pal with an employee in Japan who would like to improve his English. His name is Toshi and he is pictured with his father, sister(far left), wife (in the traditional Yukata dress) and their daughter Sawa (in blue). According to his latest e-mail, they attended the "Bon" festival and seem to be tossing back a few beers in celebration!

10 Reasons You're not Losing Weight

You're not exercising enough!

One thing many people don't understand about exercise and weight loss is this: you have to work hard if you want to change the shape of your body. That means a balance of medium-high intensity cardio exercise along with challenging strength training workouts.

Cardio

For weight loss, you'll need to get about 5 cardio workouts each week at a medium-high intensity for at least 30 minutes. If you're a beginner, it's best to start slow and work your way up but, if you're in good condition and have no restrictions, challenging yourself with harder workouts is the best way to burn more calories. Interval training is a good choice because studies show you continue to burn calories even after you've stopped exercising. Try adding one of the following interval workouts to your weekly routine or come up with your own:

Interval Training 1
Interval Training 2
Interval Training for Beginners

Strength Training

In addition to your cardio workouts, you'll need to lift weights for all your muscle groups at least 2 non-consecutive days a week.

And, by lifting weights, that means using enough weight that you can ONLY complete the desired number of reps. For example, if you're doing 12 bicep curls, you need to use enough weight that you can only do 12 bicep curls and not one more. Most people don't lift enough weight to really challenge their muscles. If that sounds familiar, check out Weight Training 101 and my Workout Center to learn how to lift weights and get some workout ideas.

You're not exercising enough
You're not getting enough sleep
You're too stressed out
You're eating too much
You're not consistent with your exercise and healthy eating
You blow it on the weekends
You haven't given yourself enough time to see results
You have a medical condition
You've hit a plateau
You don't need to lose weight

End of the Road

It's official. Just got word that the captain of our team is "stepping down" and is letting everyone know in advance so we can make our own plans for the future. I can't say it was a surprise. Well, now Jeff and I will move on to the Over 35 league and play on Tuesday nights. I'm looking forward to a change of scenery and a new group of smelly teammates!

Heidi Makes It Up The Hill

Heidi wanted to trying riding up some hills that I ride so I took her on the Llagas/Oak Glen/Willow Springs route. It's a short climb up to the Chesbro Reservoir (I think it's around 900 feet of total climbing) and Heidi had a goal of not having to "walk the bike" during any part of the ride. She succeeded (with a lot of help from her CamelBak).

My "Short" Ride to San Martin

Started off on what I thought was going to be a quick 20 mile ride through San Martin but when I rode over 101 I heard my front tire get a puncture and new I'd have to pull off and fix the tube.

Sat on the side of a road and pulled off my front wheel and proceeded to fix the flat tire. About fifteen minutes later after checking to make sure my front wheel is ready to go, I look at my bike on the ground and notice the back tire is also flat!

Now, my bike is completely disassembled and I spend another fifteen minutes on the back tire. I know, 30 minutes doesn't seem like long, but in the heat that has hit the Bay Area lately, it seemed like an eternity! Maybe I'll have to add some tire liners on my road bike to try and prevent tire punctures...

Sharks Center Awarded $700,000 In Arbitration

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose Sharks center Mark Smith was awarded a one-year contract worth $700,000 by an arbitrator Monday. Smith, 28, is coming off his best season, setting career highs in goals (9), assists (15), points (24) and games played (80). He also led the team in faceoff percentage (52).

A 1997 ninth-round pick of the New York Islanders, Smith has tallied 19 goals and 34 assists in 282 career games.

Congratulations to Smitty! He's definitely one of the hardest working guys on the ice...

'The recent heatwave has been exhausting for everyone and animals are no exception,' said Catherine Tozer, assistant manager of the farm. 'All the animals have been struggling with the heat so we have just tried to do everything we can to make them more comfortable.
